The Port Authorities – Coast Guard carry out their technical and administrative skills concerning the safety of navigation by controlling and checking all the national merchant vessels, fishing vessels and yachts and with the International agreement, also all the foreign merchant vessels which inbound national ports.

In case of emergency, throughout the national territory, a free call number “1530” is available in order to report any distress at sea.
PORT AUTHOURITIES - COAST GUARD
With its 11,000 men and women sailors, 300 premises in the territory, vessels and aircrafts, the Coast Guard is, even for its vast multi-tasks, a point of reference for all maritime activities of state jurisdiction. The Port Authorities rely on the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports and work, for specific tasks, with other Ministries.
CP 891 - SAR SEARCH AND RESCUE
Search and rescue at sea are the primary commitment of the Coast Guard, the operating area of the Port Authorities. The operational activity extends far beyond the boundaries of territorial waters, including more than 500,000km2 of sea. The General Command, through its Control Center adopts the functions of National Coordination Center for the maritime rescue (Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center). The National Center is supported by 16 sub-centers located at the Emergency Department Maritime and Coast Guard units overlapping with the peripheral Controls.

Of great importance is the activity carried out by the administrative offices located on the territory, where they are carried out annually more than one million and five hundred paperwork.

The General Command of the Port Authorities carries out on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the central coordination of control activities of sea fishing. The fishing activities are supervised at sea by the units of the Coast guard and monitored with modern satellite systems that ensure greater security of fisherman. The catch is controlled at the point of disembark and sale to verify that the marketed species are not among those prohibited and have the measures provided by the legislation.

The Coast Guard ensures peace of mind and help to those who go by sea. To this end, specific activities, such as prevention, information and control, are planned to ensure that boat owners and swimmers, especially in the summer, are safe.
VTS MonitorMONITORING OF MARITIME TRAFFIC (VESSEL TRAFFIC SERVICE) Equally importance is the prevention and surveillance on safety at sea. For this purpose the coast guard uses technological system such as Vessel Traffic Service (V.T.S.) and the Automatic Identification System (A.I.S.) that allow to constantly monitor the performance of maritime traffic while ensuring salient data communications for the navigation either for ships and with the countries of the Mediterranean area. The use of these new technologies is essential for the risk reduction and higher safety of navigation.
HOW TO JOIN THE PORT AUTHORITIES - COAST GUARD
Annually it is published an official notice of recruitment for young people aged between 18 to 25 years to join the Port Authorities as a volunteer in fix service. It is required: a middle school degree and to have the appropriate psycho-physical characteristics. You can access to the careers of Officers and Petty Officers taking part in the competitions and exams held annually, It is required a secondary school degree.
